NRC gardens and gardeners getting good

Tricycle Gardens has an update on the gardens at the NRC:

After lots of planning, building gardens, seed starting, planting and enthusiastic support, the Neighborhood Resource Center garden has started to produce vegetables, herbs, and flowers for all to enjoy! Children came to the NRC after school and were involved throughout the process of getting the gardening season underway. Some of the children in the after school program were able to attend a field trip to Victory Farms in Hanover to see how vegetables are grown on a larger scale. Now that summer has officially begun and school is out, we are continuing what was started during the spring season.

Creating Music in the NRC

Just a short drive out of Downtown Richmond heading toward Eastern Henrico County lies the community of Fulton Hill. Heading down Williamsburg Road, travelers will soon pass the Neighborhood Resource Center. The NRC offers a variety of programs for community members in the Greater Fulton Hill area.

One program is the Young Writer’s Recording Studio. This class meets every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Community children are encouraged to come and write down lyrics, poems and stories. After writing down their creation, program participants may have the chance to record their work in the sound booth. In the past two years, more than 50 participants have laid down tracks in the NRC’s Recording Studio. Last year, several completed songs were chosen to be placed on the NRC’s Studio Sampler CD.

Peaceful Fighting at the Neighborhood Resource Center

Tae Kwon Do classes offered at the Neighborhood Resource Center show that some forms of fighting can be beneficial.

Many of the martial arts movies of the 1970s show the all but invincible Bruce Lee doling out powerful punches and lightning fast kicks to his enemies. Today, actors like Jackie Chan and Jet Li carry on this tradition of dynamic fighting on the silver screen.

Partly, as a result of media images such as these, the popularity of many marital art forms in America has grown. This includes Tae Kwon Do. This particular style of martial art originated in Korea and is widely recognized for its flying kicks.

In reality, Hollywood fighting scenes are a far cry from what goes on in the Tae Kwon Do class at the Neighborhood Resource Center in Richmond’s Fulton Hill community. Here, children learn the art of Tae Kwon Do in a close family-friendly environment.
