“It became the final resting place of many of Richmond’s leading African-American citizens, including Maggie Lena Walker and John Mitchell, Jr. Their plots and the surrounding plots are cleared, though roughly. There are thousands that aren’t, many forever lost.

Opened with no means for perpetual care, the cemetery has been left mostly unchecked and suffers from vandalism and is overgrown by trees, ivy (poison and English) and weeds.

Clearing the cemetery will take years, and the small core of volunteers needs your help. Rally your friends and family and give three hours of your time one Saturday morning.”

A man is in custody, in the case of a Henrico County shootout that had threatened to run cold.

It began as a home invasion on the 2300 block of National Street, in the East End. 3:30am on Monday, August 18th. Two men with guns ran up, and barged in. Inside, a grandmother was asleep. The robbers yelled for money, and when she said there was none, they went to her grandson’s room instead.

“The grandson, in turn, pulled out a weapon of his own and began firing upon the two robbers. So they had a gun battle inside the home,” said Henrico Police Lt. Doug Perry.

Police say one of the robbers was Alexander J. Bellamy, 20, who was shot five times in the chest that night, but survived. After being chased from the house, police say he showed up minutes later at VCU Medical Center claiming to be the “victim” of a robbery…an evasive tactic that police have seen before.

“They’ll show up at the hospital with some unbelievable story, and then the VCU police are very good about saying

A National company Do Not Rent To has created a database service for Landlords to use to look up prospective renters, rental history.

“For only $30 landlords can search your name and learn if there is anything in your past that should keep them from renting to you.” – NBC12

The service provides information such as your social security number, drivers license number, date of birth and anything else a past Landlord wishes to divulge about you. What can a renter do about it? Absolutely nothing. The service is legal and a renter can’t dispute any of the information that may be in the database about them. If you want to see if your name is on the list you will have to pay the $30 dollar account fee to find out. About 40 people turned out for Wednesday’s meeting at the Neighborhood Resource Center. The meeting was part of the process of getting a community blog going for the area, to get folks involved and get the word out.

The main force behind this is VCU, working from a grant. nbc12 and the RTD are partnering with the the NRC and VCU on this endeavor. As part of their support, nbc12 provided the community center with 12 new computers.

Jeff South from VCU showed 4 local news blogs, including the Richmond’s own Church Hill People’s News and Carver&Jackson Ward News. Bridgette Huff overcame a slow network to show how easy it is to post stories to the site. The site is still in development, and the name is still open for discussion.

Contact the Neighborhood Resource Center if you are interested in helping with the site or learning how to be a neighborhood reporter!
