Residents of Montrose Heights please be alert a house was broken into on Luray Ave. last week. It is the same type crime that has been the trend in Greater Fulton Hill area since the beginning of spring: The house was vacant for many days, (he owner was out of town) the house next door is not lived in, the backyard is wooded and concealed and the people broke in through the rear door taking a camera, a bicycle, etc… It seems to have occurred during the day.

The police have told me that most of this type of crime is being committed by kids 14-18 years old and they walk around in groups of two to four people scoping out houses with no one home. There was an arrest of a young man recently that was behind many of these breaking and enterings, but it seems some kids are still doing it.

If at all possible, when you are not home, keep your houses as secure as possible. Keep windows locked and if you have a back door with glass panes in it you might consider putting in a double cylinder bolt lock that requires a key from the inside and from the outside. You need to keep the inside key on a hook near the door but out of reach if someone were to break a pane.

If you see groups of kids that look suspicious and/or you don’t recognize them, please call non-emergency police at 646-5100 and give as accurate a description as possible.

Lt. Laino from the 1st precinct is pleading that we all watch for groups of young men preying on properties, mostly during the day, but also at night. There has been a great spike in burglaries in the last two months or so in Fulton Hill, Montrose Heights and Fulton (Bottom.)

He asked that we all keep our eyes open for kids, most have been under 18, in groups of 2-4 wandering into people’s property and busting out windows, often in the back of houses, mostly when owner’s are at work, and stealing property.

His message below states that when the police have asked questions in the areas most recently hit, many of the people the police questioned said that they had in fact seen suspicious people in the area when the crimes were committed but very few have reported questionable or unreasonable behavior and trespassing.

PLEASE PLEASE share this information with at least five friends and or neighbors or preferably your whole block. The First Precinct needs help right now to quell this.

Call 911, or non-emergency 646-5100

Message from Lt. James Laino:

As far as our earlier conversation if you could advise residents in the Montrose Heights and Fulton Neighborhoods to report any suspicious activity to the police as soon as possible. Since the beginning of the year there have been 19 residences broken into while the residents have been away from their home. In some cases neighbors had heard and/or observed suspicious activity at the time of the incident but didn’t realize the importance of the information until detectives canvassed their neighborhood the next day. Also there were 14 cars stolen and 13 additional cars broken into since the beginning of the year. Please advise residents not to leave items in plain sight within the interior of their cars and to make sure their cars are locked at all times.

I will talk to you tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help,
James Laino
