The Life and Times of Rocketts Landing Businessman Charles Lewis

Anita Wills
Charles and Ambrose Lewis were born in King George County to a white father, and Mulatto mother. Charles was probably the older of the two, born about 1750, while Ambrose was born about 1752. In 1771 the brothers were sentenced to serve twenty year Indentures because of their Mulatto status. They worked on the Page Galley as Seamen, until the Revolutionary War broke out. In 1777 the brothers signed on as Sailors, while working on the Page Galley. They served first on the Page Galley and then on the Dragon Ship along the Rappahannock River.
