How it will affect the rural areas of the Varina District has been one of the hot topics in the 2026 Comprehensive Plan, which is up for final approval Tuesday by the Henrico Board of Supervisors. Envision Henrico and the Partnership for Smarter Growth have asked supporters to attend the meeting to protest redesignation of Varina Farm for Suburban Mixed Use development.

As reported by NBC12

Richmond’s Police chief says an effort to eradicate violent crime in the city is paying off. Police are focusing on neighborhoods in the East End and Northside with the “Fugitives and Firearms Initiative.”This initiative targets wanted persons and illegal guns.

20 strong — Richmond police are teaming up with officers from the state police and the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority — together they’re cracking down on violent crimes. A round of applause for a job well-done. The goal: eradicate violent crime in Richmond.

Focusing on the city’s East End and Northside — the fugitives and firearms initiative is underway.”This team is very mobile, so if we have some hot spot integrity that we need to maintain a flash or pan or some area we need to address quickly, we can send them there as well,” said Richmond Police Chief Bryan Norwood.

Numbers show the fugitive and firearms initiative is accomplishing it’s goal. To date, officers assigned to this effort have made nearly 50 felony arrests, 90 misdemeanor arrests and served more than 70 warrants. They’ve also conducted more than 350 field interviews, seized 55 firearms and also taken thousands of dollars worth of drugs and drug money off the streets.

“By pooling all of our manpower and resources, we can make a substantial difference in the communities and the lives of the folks that live in those communities we think, and thanks to this commitment here, we are doing that in Richmond this summer,” said Col. H.C. Davis, Virginia State Police.

And it’s paying off — at least in the Northside where this initiative has resulted in an 80 percent reduction in aggravated assaults involving firearms.

“They feel the pressure out there and that’s where we can’t to keep them,” said Major John Keohane. “We want to keep the criminals off balance and let them know that we have a strong presence of police officers looking to get these firearms off the street.”

The fugitives and firearms initiative runs through September.

This is a community effort — so if you have information about wanted persons or illegal guns in the city — call the police tips line at 514-TIPS.

A 19-year-old man was being treated at VCU Medical Center this evening after being shot in the chest. Richmond police units converged on the 2200 block of Redd Street near Mechanicsville Turnpike where they found the victim conscious and breathing about 5:15 p.m. It was not clear where the man was shot, but nearby residents said they heard as many as a half-dozen shots fired. About 50 people surrounded the crime scene within minutes of the shooting but quickly dispersed when police approached them for information. The man’s identity and condition were not immediately available.

A man is in custody, in the case of a Henrico County shootout that had threatened to run cold.

It began as a home invasion on the 2300 block of National Street, in the East End. 3:30am on Monday, August 18th. Two men with guns ran up, and barged in. Inside, a grandmother was asleep. The robbers yelled for money, and when she said there was none, they went to her grandson’s room instead.

“The grandson, in turn, pulled out a weapon of his own and began firing upon the two robbers. So they had a gun battle inside the home,” said Henrico Police Lt. Doug Perry.

Police say one of the robbers was Alexander J. Bellamy, 20, who was shot five times in the chest that night, but survived. After being chased from the house, police say he showed up minutes later at VCU Medical Center claiming to be the “victim” of a robbery…an evasive tactic that police have seen before.

“They’ll show up at the hospital with some unbelievable story, and then the VCU police are very good about saying

A high-speed chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph began in Richmond’s East End before ending in Henrico County this morning with the arrests of two people.

The chase began shortly after 10 a.m. when Richmond police tried to pull over a vehicle along Williamsburg Road for a drug offense.

The vehicle, with four people inside, traveled at a high rate of speed into Henrico, where police from the county assisted in the pursuit.

The pursuit went past the new White Oak Village shopping center along Laburnum Avenue, and at one stage, Richmond officers said the vehicle being pursued accelerated to a speed in excess of 100 mph.

Two of the passengers jumped out at an intersection before the pursuit ended on Osborne Turnpike at Tree Ridge Road with the arrest of the driver and one of the passengers.

There was no immediate word on charges.
