How to post a picture on Greater Fulton News
By Jeff South, VCU School of Mass Communications
WordPress, the software that we use for the Fulton Web site, makes it easy to upload one or more photos and include them in a “post” (or article). Under our template, a photo should be no more than 420 pixels wide. So be sure to resize your photos before you upload them. When your photos are the proper size, here’s what to do:
1. Log in to the Web site and create a new post.
2. Scroll down until you see this “Upload” box:
“Upload” means to copy the photo from your computer to the WordPress server. Once it’s on the server, you’ll be able to place it on your Web posting.
3. “Browse” and find the photo you want. You can give the photo a title and description. This information won’t appear on your post; but people will be able to see it if they put their cursor on the photo. It’s OK to leave the title and description fields blank.
4. Click the “Upload” button, and you’ll see this - indicating that a copy of the photo is now on the WordPress server.
5. Now, you need to make some decisions. Do you want to post a thumbnail of the photo - about the size of a postage stamp - and link that to the full-size picture? (That’s what the above settings would do.) This might be a good option if you’re going to post two or three photos, so that they’ll fit together nicely in a short posting. In my case, I have only one photo and I want to appear full size. So I check “Show: Full size.”
6. Now you can place the photo on the post that you are creating. In the “Post” box, make sure your cursor is where you want the photo to go. Then click “Send to editor.”
7. You’ll see that your photo is now in the “Post” box. (If the picture isn’t where you want it, you can click on the photo and drag it to different location in the “Post” box.) You can assign your posting one or more categories (such as art and youth) to make it easy to find. You can even give the post a more specific tag, such as the name of the artist.
8. Click “Publish.” Then you can view your post - with your photo - on the Fulton Web site.
