Back 2 School Rally at the Powhatan Hill Community Center
Tuesday, August 26th – School supplies will be given away as well as food, games, face painting, etc. In addition, free haircuts and health checks (parents/guardians must attend). You must register for this event (registration begins tomorrow at 1:00pm to 4:30pm). The event starts at 1:00pm and ends at 6:00pm. Contact John Williams (John.R.Williams@richmondgov.com) the centers supervisor for more information.

Books on Wheels coming to NRC
Richmond’s own Books on Wheels will be at the NRC on Saturday, May 10th, performing free bike repair and passing out free books.

Neighborhood Resource Center provides opportunity for Richmond children
The Neighborhood Resource Center located near Darbytown and Williamsburg Roads opened its doors several years ago to the residents of Fulton Hill. What used to be a place where letters and packages were sent and delivered has been transformed into a place that holds a mission, a mission of providing hope for the children of greater Fulton Hill. Neighborhood Resource Center reaches out to all
People of all ages can take advantage of the resources that Fulton Hill’s Neighborhood Resource Center offers. Activities range from art, ballet and modern dance, to tutoring sessions, computer basics and General Education Diploma classes. Most programs are free and are run by community volunteers.

new program for at-risk students
The new opportunity for Fulton resident Kevin Battle is featured in an RTD profile of the new Performance Learning Center at the Richmond Technical Center. The PLC is a small school of about 65 students in four classrooms that targets those at high risk of dropping out, and is the first of its kind in Virginia.

New Push for Fulton Elementary School
A small group of Fulton residents met with School Board member Keith West and veteran civic activist Art Burton to begin a new surge in the campaign to build a new elementary school in Fulton. Mr. Burton urged the group to step up local participation in the Build Schools Now initiative, including attendance at the School Board meeting this coming Monday, Nov. 5 at 6pm at City Hall, and a public rally planned for Nov. 26th.

Recreation Sports Assist in the Childhood Obesity Epidemic
While the term epidemic has been used to label everything from the gay pride epidemic, to the fashion epidemic of the 1980s, the word regains its meaning when in reference to childhood obesity. The prevalence of overweight among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years, going from 7% in 1980 to 18.8% in 2004 and an estimated 61% of overweight young people have at least one additional risk factor for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Young Writers Recording Studio Invites New Members
The Young Writers Recording Studio meets weekly in a songwriting workshop to share and write lyrics and poetry. Participants collaborate with a local musician mentor to produce finished lyrics and record them in the studio. Learn more about the program and get involved!
