Registration for After School Programs set for Sept.2-5

Fall registration for the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ After School Programs will take place Sept. 2 through Sept. 5 from school closing to 5:30 p.m. each day. Registration is held in the school cafeterias of the 21 Richmond elementary schools where the program is offered.

Back 2 School Rally at the Powhatan Hill Community Center

Tuesday, August 26th – School supplies will be given away as well as food, games, face painting, etc. In addition, free haircuts and health checks (parents/guardians must attend). You must register for this event (registration begins tomorrow at 1:00pm to 4:30pm). The event starts at 1:00pm and ends at 6:00pm. Neighborhood Resource Center provides opportunity for Richmond children

The Neighborhood Resource Center located near Darbytown and Williamsburg Roads opened its doors several years ago to the residents of Fulton Hill. What used to be a place where letters and packages were sent and delivered has been transformed into a place that holds a mission, a mission of providing hope for the children of greater Fulton Hill.

Applications for city’s open enrollment schools due Feb. 8

Applications to attend one of Richmond City’s open enrollment schools for the 2008-2009 school year are due Feb. 8. Open enrollment elementary schools are divided into three zones. The Zone III elementary schools are Bellevue, Ginter Park and Woodville, Binford Middle School is the city’s open enrollment middle school, and the open enrollment high schools are Franklin Military Academy, Open and Richmond Community.

$134,000 moved from Fairfield MS

RTD columnist Michael Paul Williams looks at a recent transfer of renovation money away from Fairfield Middle School to 2 West End high schools and calls it a “blatant” cheating of East Henrico. On Thursday night, Henrico School Board members voted 3-2 to transfer $134,000 away from a renovation at the 50-year-old Fairfield Middle School to free up design money for two 12,400-square-foot field houses at Deep Run and Tucker high schools.

The Richmond School Board held a public forum this evening at Armstrong High School to present and take comments on their “New Direction for RPS” planning as of yet. In attendance were board members Keith West and Chandra Smith, and RPS Superintendent Dr.Jewell-Sherman.

At last night’s School Board Meeting, the Board’s move to adopt an updated facilities master plan stalled, with the plan sent to the facilities committee for more research. A small group of adults (some in plastic yellow hardhats) urged the board to reconsider the plan and to consider building an elementary school in Fulton. [via]

new program for at-risk students

The new opportunity for Fulton resident Kevin Battle is featured in an RTD profile of the new Performance Learning Center at the Richmond Technical Center. The PLC is a small school of about 65 students in four classrooms that targets those at high risk of dropping out, and is the first of its kind in Virginia.

New Push for Fulton Elementary School

A small group of Fulton residents met with School Board member Keith West and veteran civic activist Art Burton to begin a new surge in the campaign to build a new elementary school in Fulton. Mr. Burton urged the group to step up local participation in the Build Schools Now initiative, including attendance at the School Board meeting this coming Monday, Nov. 5 at 6pm at City Hall, and a public rally planned for Nov. 26th.

7th District Mayor’s Roundtable meeting

The October meeting of the Mayor’s Roundtable for the 7th District met tonight at EDI on 25th Street. Not counting the folks directly involved in running the meeting or presenting, there was an audience of 5. It was a small but feisty gathering, with a presentation on the City of Richmond 2008-2013 Consolidated Plan and Central Montessori School on the agenda.
