This year when you have H&R Block do your taxes you can raise money for the Neighborhood Resource Center. As a new client H&R Block will donate $25 to the NRC when you come in with the referral form. Referral forms can be picked up at the NRC, 1519 Williamsburg rd. To redeem the offer bring the form in with your taxes to be prepared between 1/1/10 – 4/15/10. Good News, Natural Gas prices are going down in Richmond!

Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones announced an 18-percent reduction today in the city’s purchased gas cost, which he said will result in an 11-percent gas bill reduction for a typical residential customer.

Jones said in a statement that the decrease came as a result of a decline in natural gas prices over the last several months.

“I am pleased that this fluctuation in natural gas prices is to the benefit of the consumer. The fact that natural gas bills will continue to go down for our customers is good news I’m happy to bring during this turbulent economic time,” Jones said.

The city said the cost of natural gas it purchases is charged to customers without any markup. The other components in the price of gas to consumers are charges for delivery and service, the city said.

The decrease will show in bills customers receive in October.

The city reminded customers it offers a monthly budget plan to help balance their utility costs over 12 months. Information on that plan and other measures to help consumers with payment issues is available by calling 644-3000 or visiting the utility department’s Web site at www.richmondgov.com/dpu.

VA Sales Tax Holiday starts Friday!

Time to stock up on clothes and school supplies, Virginia Sales Tax Holiday begins Friday, August 7-9

During this three-day period, purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax. Each eligible school supply item must be priced at $20 or less, and each eligible article of clothing and footwear must be priced at $100 or less. For details, visit the VA Dept of

The Neighborhood Resource Center is having a yard sale this Saturday, June 27th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 1519 Williamsburg Rd. Anyone who wants to volunteer to help set up or operate it would be more than welcome. Also, please ask you neighbors, friends, family members, co-workers, even strangers if they have any items they could contribute.

Has everyone gotten their “This is not a bill” bill from the City of Richmond for the new stormwater fee? Enclosed is a handy brochure, entitled “Stormwater: What you need to know.” The brochure covers things like why Richmond needs this fee, what is stormwater runoff, and more importantly who pays for this?

In accordance with Richmond City Ordinance 2009-60, property owners of developed property within the city shall pay a stormwater utility fee based upon the stormwater class and the amount of impervious surface area. An impervious surface is one that prevents precipitation from rain or snow from soaking into the ground. Impervious surfaces include, but are not limited to rooftops, streets, parking areas, and any concrete, asphalt or compacted gravel surface.

Richmond is looking to add another tax to home and property owners. The city is proposing a Storm Water Utility Fee to help pay for the cities aging infrastructure. Property owners can expect to pay between $25 and $70 dollars depending upon the square footage of your roof line and driveway. If passed we will be receiving our bills as early as Summer 2009.
