Norwood Taylor, the director of the food pantry at Ginter Park United Methodist Church, spends his Wednesday mornings preparing food bags and other supplies for those in need. His pantry operates on a weekly basis for individuals who need emergency food assistance.

Delegate Franklin P. Hall, D-Richmond, announced Friday that he will retire from the Virginia General Assembly after serving in the legislature for more than three decades. Gov. Timothy Kaine plans to appoint Hall to the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

Recycling rate tops 50% in Richmond

For the first time, Richmond-area residents are recycling more trash than they throw away, according to new state figures.

The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority reported a recycling rate of 50.3 percent for 2007. That was up from 46.3 percent in 2006.

7,500 people 'made strides against breast cancer' in Richmond.

Taking patients to and from breast cancer treatment. Providing lodging close to treatment centers when patients must travel long distances. Raising the confidence of women through beauty and makeup lessons.

Those are just some of the services provided by the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program, a nationwide series of fundraising walks held by the American Cancer Society.

The society held a 5-kilometer Making Strides walk on Oct. 19 in downtown Richmond. It raised nearly $575,000 to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Neighborhood Resource Center reaches out to all

People of all ages can take advantage of the resources that Fulton Hill’s Neighborhood Resource Center offers. Activities range from art, ballet and modern dance, to tutoring sessions, computer basics and General Education Diploma classes. Most programs are free and are run by community volunteers.

Residents of Greater Fulton Hill are invited to a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Neighborhood Resource Center to discuss plans for creating a Web site with news and information for and about the community.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Neighborhood Resource Center, 1519 Williamsburg Road. After free pizza and soft drinks, the discussion will focus on creating an interactive portal for Fulton Hill
