City Extends Pool Hours Due to Heat

The city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities will extend the hours of operation at all eight of the department’s outdoor public swimming pools for the weekend due to the forecasted high temperatures. 

On Saturday, July 24, the department’s pools will open at noon and remain open until 8 p.m., and on Sunday, July 25, the pools will open at 1 p.m. and remain open until 8 p.m. 

Normal operating hours will resume on Monday, July 26. Normal pool hours are Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call Powhatan Hill Pool at 646-3595.

Chiefs Juniors Victorious

The Powhatan Hill Chiefs Junior basketball team defeated the Bellemeade Rams to win the City Championship.  The final score was 54 to 41; the Juniors were led by Roderick Fleming with 13 points and Keron Dixon with 12 points. The whole team contributed with great defense and rebounds.  The Juniors finished the season undefeated.

City to hold ‘Eggstravaganzas’ for children

Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities will hold two free spring “Eggstravaganzas” for area children featuring egg hunts with a total of more than 30,000 candy-filled eggs.

The first will be held Saturday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center, located at 4901 Old Brood Rd., and the second will be held Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Forest Hill Park, located at 41st Street and Forest Hill Avenue. Both events will include games, music, food, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon artists, the opportunity to have a caricature portrait drawn and a photo taken with “Mr. Bunny,” as well as an abundance of other activities and prizes. The Richmond Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office will also be on hand to fingerprint children.

Chiefs Junior Basketball team advances to the City Championships

The Powhatan Hill Chiefs Boys Junior Basketball team defeated R.O.C. 48 – 40 to advance to the City of Richmond’s youth basketball championships. The championship game will take place on Saturday, March 20th, at 10:45am; the game will be played at Lucille Brown Middle School. The junior team (ages 13 – 14) will play the Bellemeade Rams for the title.

Chiefs Youth Football Season Comes to an End

Two youth football teams from the Powhatan Hill Community Center played for the City Championships on Saturday, November 21st. The Juniors (ages 13-14) played the Westover Warriors at Hovie Field (V.U.U.) and the J.V. PeeWees (ages 7-9) played the Bellemeade Rams at Hotchkiss Field. Each team gave their best effort but lost 7 to 0 in both games. The Juniors and J.V. PeeWees won the Northeast Championships to advance to the City Championships.

The Chiefs youth basketball program season will begin in January; registration begins in December.

Youth Football Games for Chiefs Rescheduled

The Powhatan Hill Chiefs J.V. PeeWee Championship game previously schedueled for Saturday, November 14th has been changed to Saturday, November 21st. The game will be played at  Hotchkiss Playground located at 701 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Semi-final games for the Juniors and PeeWees will be played on Wednesday, November 18th at Blackwell Playground located at 300 E. 15th Street (across from Blackwell Elementary School). The PeeWee game begins at 6:00pm; the Juniors game will be played at 7:30pm. GO CHIEFS!

Chiefs J.V. PeeWees Playing in Championship Game

The Powhatan Hill Chiefs J.V. PeeWees won an overtime game this past weekend to earn the right to play in the City Championship Game. They will play this Saturday, November 14th at Hotchkiss Playground (701 E. Brookland Park Blvd.) at 11:30am. The J.V. PeeWee team consist of boys aged 8 and 9 (with some 7 year old players). In addition, the Juniors and PeeWees will also play this Saturday at Beard Field (Battery Park) in semi-finals games for the opportunity to play for the City Championships in their age divisions. The Juniors will play at 10:00am and the PeeWees at 1:30pm. If your schedule permits, come out and support your neighborhood teams.

There will be a financial education workshop at the Powhatan Hill Community Center (5051 Northampton Street) on Monday, October 12 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. We promise it will not be another boring seminar of information you already know. The following will be covered: 1) The Rule of 72; 2) The Power of Compound Interest; 3) common errors consumers make; 4) Reverse Mortgages; 5) How to plan for retirement. All of this in 1 hour or less. If you want to expand your financial knowledge and work towards making your dreams a reality, make plans to hang out with us for about one hour. Light refreshments and a free individual plan will be available to all who attend this event.
