Man arrested following home invasion/shoot out

A man is in custody, in the case of a Henrico County shootout that had threatened to run cold.

It began as a home invasion on the 2300 block of National Street, in the East End. 3:30am on Monday, August 18th. Two men with guns ran up, and barged in. Inside, a grandmother was asleep. The robbers yelled for money, and when she said there was none, they went to her grandson’s room instead.

“The grandson, in turn, pulled out a weapon of his own and began firing upon the two robbers. So they had a gun battle inside the home,” said Henrico Police Lt. Doug Perry.

Police say one of the robbers was Alexander J. Bellamy, 20, who was shot five times in the chest that night, but survived. After being chased from the house, police say he showed up minutes later at VCU Medical Center claiming to be the “victim” of a robbery…an evasive tactic that police have seen before.
