Charles and Ambrose Lewis were born in King George County to a white father, and Mulatto mother.

Mulatto means mule to us latinos (and biracials). Not a very nice thing to call someone, even you are their descendant.

My ancestor was born in the mid 1700′s, and that is what they called him. I know it is difficult to understand but know that I did not label anyone Mulatto. The article was written from the perspective of Colonial Virginia.

    Great article!
I was curious about the lives of Fanny and Hannah and the time period when they filed as heirs of Ambrose Lewis. I have that same mother/daughter combination in my family genealogy, too. Any later Loudoun County connection with the Lewis surname?
The name Josephine is threaded throughout this same side of my family, causing me to wonder about the origins.
Also, I noted with interest others who stated themselves as being heirs of Ambrose Lewis in Fredreicksburg. Sally Chew. This name is also in my family, though on another side. the Chew family also spread from Fredericksburg westward in VA to Manassas, Rockingham Cty, and Augusta Cty, seems like. I would like to discuss this further with you!
