Dear editor, I realize that unless you were a part of this era as well as area the interest in this subject is marginal at the most. But the mere fact of not being able to see the house, or street, or even the community that helped shape everything from your belief system to the things we expected in or from life creates a bit of a void. This community, however deprived taught some of the most important lessons of our lifetime. we never knew how poor we were simply because there was always someone poorer..right in sight. Had I known as a child that I would have to rely on memory alone as oppose to BEvisual i would have cherrished the time more.
fulton was a very unique community that i will always remember as my roots. but when you think of all those alleys you ran through as the dogs in the neighbors yard barked, or the way uncle bubba girlfriend would stabb him every saturday night.
not to mentioned the fabric that is weaved when you not only knew every student in your school, but every family member of that student. you simply can not replace such a unit. the twelve block radius from the james river to government rd seemed 12 miles at the time.
but to know every family in every house on almost every street is unheard of these days.
i don’t remember many of the teachers who taught at webster davis during the 60’s who actually lived in fulton. but my father (squt)was a member of the firedome social club across from john and dave’s barber shop. next door to the barber shop “stiffen” had an crap house ..oopps, i mean amusement center.
we grew up with broad st.6 and main st 53 were mainstays in our memory. every one who grew up in this community can attest to the fact that we would not change a thing about the experience in fulton. however in retrospect, i personally wish i would have recognized any mentors that were trying to help me become a better individual, a more prepared individual,as well as more discipline and responsible. in my case and i will only assume that this was the case for a lot of the residents these above characteristics were abstract. Based on retrospect this is what i’ve concluded. There is a certain path to follow, in order to be the best. But whether or not you are the best, You still have a chance to pass the test. There is a chance you will achieve, or even state a claim, But if by chance you miss your shot, you
