Minutes from the Oct 2008 Greater Fulton Civic Association Meeting

Here are the minutes from The Greater Fulton Civic Association meeting October 2008. Once again thanks to Brenda for providing the minutes. They are available for download and print here (PDF) and here (Word).

The first General Meeting for the Greater Fulton Civic Association was held on October 14, at 7pm at the Neighborhood Resource Center. The officers for the 2008-2009 year are: Bobby Vickers-President, Brandon JayCox –Vice President, Brenda Vickers-Secretary, Brett JayCox-Assistant Secretary and Keith Grady-Treasurer.

Officer Cirino and Lt. Hood were the representatives for the Richmond Police Department, 1st Precinct. Officer Cirino gave us a crime update stating that crime was down in our area, however burglary of homes was up and usually taking place during the time of 3pm to 6pm
.
Lt. Hood spoke about the gang activity in our area. Arrests have been made concerning the shooting at the pool, random gun shooting is down and 16 indictments have taken place so you will see more police involvement in our community. Be vigilant and know what’s going on in the community.

The Police Department have now added more signs in various locations. This means that neighbors are watching out for one another. If you would like to be a volunteer for Neighborhood Watch please call Rebecca Fralin at 512-4196.

Jay Williams, Supervisor for the Powhatan Hill Community Center expressed his excitement concerning the wonderful programs for this year. “We have more football and cheerleaders than ever before, including coaches.” He was proud of the fact that the Center will host the Candidate Forum on October 21 at 7pm. On November 4 this is the voting center for us and later in November we will have the Native American Festival. In December we will sponsor a dinner for children 10 years and younger.

Mary Lou Decossaux director of the Neighborhood Resource Center is excited about the Montessori Preschool and the various programs that are offered at the center in the afternoon for the children. The fundraiser which is sponsored by Rockets Landing, “Run to the River” will be held on October 18 starting at 9:30am and volunteers are needed. The Café featuring nutrition education, cooking classes will be open soon.

Dexter Goode, Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) gave us information on the Hope 6 Project which is located in Fulton Village. The first phase will build 26 homes and 45 homes outside the realm of Hope 6. This is for 1st time home buyers and RRHA is willing to help 1st time home buyers financially. If interested please contact Dexter Goode at ldgoode@RRHA.STATE.VA.US.

Opposed to Hope 6 project is Spencer Jones President of Fulton Family Reunion Committee and he would like to see Fulton Memorial Park be established at 4800 block of Fulton Street. If interested in learning more please see the recent newsletter bottom of page 6.

Carolyn Bourdow-Chairperson of the Earth Committee “if everyone would change at least one light bulb with and ENERGY STAR qualified bulb this would save energy for more than 3 million homes for a year.” ENERGY STAR bulbs use about 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. Carolyn presented CFL light bulbs to anyone that was interested in reducing energy costs.

Our next General Meeting is scheduled for December 9, 2008 at 7pm…see you there.
