While I appreciate the effort that went into revamping the newsletter, I have some grave concerns with the editorial slant taken in the Fall 2009 edition. I moved to Montrose Heights because it was an established community. I did not move to greater Fulton because I thought it was going to be the next Fan neighborhood. I respect that some of my neighbors have lived in their homes for more than 40 years and would ask some of the new officers to do the same. The sacrifices that are made by many to own their own home or simply rent in this neighborhood should not be lost sight of. I find the interview with the real estate agent on page 13 particularly disturbing. Some tips on how to not become a victim of predatory lenders would have been a community service, lecturing on curb appeal is free advertising. I am left with the sad feeling that the neighborliness and sense of true community may be gone from the civic association. I will be attending the meeting on October 14th, and hope that it may a forum to nip this new attitude in the bud. Gentrification equals displacement and a loss of existing communities. Given that we are but the remains of a much larger neighborhood that was lost to the misguided philosphy of “urban renewal,” I find this new approach tragic.
Note that the post to which you have responded is from October 2008 and the the next meeting of the Greater Fulton Hill Civic Association is actually October 13.
Hi Jenny – I was honored to lend my professional opinion when asked. Not sure why that would have disturbed you, except for the fact that the topic was not what you, personally, were looking for.
I live on Rawlings – in Montrose, too. Maybe we are neighbors. I also work up here lots, so if you would ever like to chat about your concerns, feel free to look for one of my many signs and call me at that number – a number that would have been listed in the newsletter were that article about advertising.
I am grateful for the many comments received that told me, personally, that they found the perspective in the little blurb helpful. I am happy and proud to be an active member of this community.
Change happens whether we choose to be angry about it or not. Suppressing this will always be a losing battle. The best I, or anyone, can do is to be available to support those that may need it as their neighborhood continues to blossom.
Shannon
PS – How not to become a victim of predatory anything: read everything you sign very, VERY carefully, and if there is something that you don’t understand, seek legal advice.
