From each according to his ability, to each according to his need…
NRG Krysys‘ John Gotschalk has put together a novel approach to collecting pledges for tomorrow’s Run to the River 10k:
Now I had every intention of running this race, but it turns out that I will be playing music in a smoky bar the night before and can’t honestly see myself getting up and running first thing after going to bed at two or three in the morning. However, I told Mary Lou and Annette, the NRC’s hardworking codirectors, that I would try and collect some pledges anyway.
So, let me say to you that I promise to sit the race out and sleep in while my wife and kids volunteer at the event. In fact, beginning at 8 a.m., I will stay in bed an extra minute for every dollar I receive in pledges (up to, say, 180 minutes or so).

Toughest 10K in the East! + Brazilian Dance
From the October 29, 2008 NRC Press Release
The Run to River was great!
Despite a very rainy Friday, race day was cold and dry. We knew, we had tapped into a world of serious runners when people started showing up in boxers and short sleeves! The race started under an arc of balloons. Seventy plus racers ran and walked the hilly course. They huffed and puffed and cursed the stairs at Libby Hill. They broke a sweat along the James and chatted up cheery road-side volunteers, “How many more hills? Are we getting close?” Up the last hill, through the back streets, the saxy sounds of Hotel X let runners know the finish line was near.
