The Grand Opening of the Shops at WhiteOak Village off of Laburnum ave is set for Oct 13, 2008.

Here are a few stores that we are finally getting out in our area. Though I can’t believe we are not getting a Barnes and Noble…hopefully that will be coming.

  • Target
  • Petsmart
  • Circuit City
  • Sams Club
  • Lowes
  • Office Max

You can visit the website here fore more information on the stores and the grand opening.

I’m still surprised that a bookstore won’t be here or hasn’t come to Mechanicsville yet.

And while I’m dreaming, how great would a 2nd Apple store be?

From what I have seen it seems every time they build a Petsmart and Target together, Barnes and Noble is with them too. With such an upscale shopping center coming I am very surprised by it’s absense.

Second Apple store? Why not! and might I also add a movie theater to the list…we would never have to leave the East End again!

    Upscale…you’re joking right? Deb Shoppe,
5 Below, Dots and Sam’s Club and most of the other tenants will be a call to the ghetto! It will be like Virginia Center Commons all over again.

Compared to our choices at the moment, White Oak is way upscale. I’ll be quite happy to be able to ride my bike to these shops instead of driving to Mechanicsville Turnpike for office supplies.

I spoke to the manager at Ukrops and their new store at whiteoaks will be opening on the 7th. It will be as the same quality as the new ones in Williamsburg and Short Pump including an organic section with its own manager.

  6. posted by vmallonee at September 11, 2008 3:29 pm :

I said upscale because it is being built by the same people who built Short Pump Mall and I agree with Juliellen, it is very upscale to what we have now. Why William do you automatically assume it will be “ghetto”? Just because it is in the East End and not in the West End? I have faith in our community and I think people are excited about this. Also I have a membership to Sam’s Club…had it for years and now I won’t have to drive out to the West End to go! I think it is better then Costco!

BTW there is also a 5 Below right by the mall…in the West End.

  8. posted by freddy at September 11, 2008 6:26 pm :

i think it is great that this shopping center is coming.. people forget that the first thing that came to short pump was a Walmart.. and now look at it.. so i think we are deffinetly heading in the right direction… and what detures crime and bad people better than bright lights and crowds of PEOPLE

  9. posted by Roy at September 11, 2008 8:38 pm :

I’m excited about the new mall and about having a Lowe’s and Target so close. I think it will help with property values and it will have a positive effect on the levels of crime in our neighborhoods. They have sunk a lot of money into this mall, so they are going to make certain that patrons feel safe. I think our neighborhoods will benefit with new people being attracted to the area to live, work, and play. When I was deciding on whether to purchase my house a few months ago, White Oak was factored into the equation.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I would also agree that the mall is upscale. I know you can’t satisfy everybody, but this is a damn good start.

  10. posted by william at September 11, 2008 9:52 pm :

Neighborhoods that have been factored into the “trade circle” of this center such as Rockett’s Landing, Patriot’s Landing, and Brickshire will have no interest in this center. The tenant mix of the specialty stores is decidedly downscale. To consider retailers such as Dress Barn, DTLR, Lim’s Menswear, and Freemans upscale is just absurd. Concentrating stores that cater to a downscale market is just asking for trouble. Every baby momma and daddy grillz from the hood will be flocking to the place. Henrico better set up a Police substation at the place for all the shoplifting and fraud calls they are going to have. No thanks…I’ll stick to Banana Republic, Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, and Nordstrom.

  11. posted by vmallonee at September 11, 2008 10:18 pm :

William I have to ask, since you are so concerned about a “baby momma and a daddy grillz from the hood” why is it that you even live in the East End? Or do you not and your just being a judgmental outsider?

I love Banana and Jcrew as much as anyone, my closet is full of Jcrew…but we are not talking about a Mall we are talking about a nice shopping center, with a Target, a Sams Club, Lowes and a Petsmart…would you rather save gas money by avoiding going all the way out to the West End or remain a snob?

  12. posted by william at September 11, 2008 10:39 pm :

I’ll remain a snob….Who said anything about the West End…Stony Point will be just fine thanks!

  13. posted by Roy at September 12, 2008 11:36 am :

It sounds like our future shopping experience just got a little nicer.

  14. posted by vickie at September 15, 2008 12:47 pm :

william, you are more than welcomed to stay near your precious stony point or short pump malls. the east end doesn’t need your bigotry, thank you very much.

  15. posted by devon at September 18, 2008 3:29 pm :

I have to agree with most of the people here that White Oaks will be great for the community. It may not be upscale and to William’s liking, but the east end has to start somewhere, right?? White Oaks is already bringing more business. Case and point, Best Buy is opening up right across the street from White Oaks since a Circuit City is going there. Will done to the community for White Oaks.

  16. posted by jackie at September 19, 2008 10:25 am :

I guess the people who shop at Stoney Point don’t steal. How dare someone feels that everyone who lives in the East End steal and are ghetto. We may not have ALL of the money that the people who shop at Stoney Point have, but there are plenty of decent law abiding citizens in the East End who are pleased with some of the stores coming to the area. You Stoney Point people may not steal, but you sure have other sinful ways. He who is without sin, cast the first stone. William, I am sure you have done something wrong in your life time or are you a perfect ANGEl.

  17. posted by Ree at September 22, 2008 11:21 am :

I am a little disappointed in the mall. I thought it would have more department stores. Seems to have alot of urban youth retailers. No thanks. Yeah they will definitely need to have police out there and a curfew for children under 18. Under 21 would be even better.

  18. posted by Vivian at September 22, 2008 6:47 pm :

Where can you contact the stores for job employment in White Oak Village?

  19. posted by Ebony at September 23, 2008 11:22 am :

This is a joke. The new mall is truly catering to the clientele that will frequent the mall. Why do we need another Shoe City, DTLR, Dress Barn when they already exist across the street? What happened to Macy’s? I don’t like the fact that it appears that they’re throwing us a bone just to shut us up. I will still have to travel to Short Pump and Stoney Point to shop. This new mall does not for me. Absolutely nothing.

  20. posted by Lori at September 30, 2008 11:10 am :

PEOPLE… First it is called The Shops at White Oak Village.. who said anything about a mall. It is not meant to be a mall. If you have a problem with the store selections take it up with the leaser. And other thing if you don’t feel safe, Do NOT go. You people complain so much about feeling safe but are the same people who do not attend county meetings to express your concerns. I am not even at home right now i am in College and cannot wait for the shops to open because traveling to the West end or Mechanicsville to go to Target is annoying. The Varina/East End Area has needed this for years and the one time that we get at least a little something you people are NEVER satisfied. You act like little spoiled children who always want more cookies even when they aren’t ready yet. BE patient… this is the START to more to come.

  21. posted by JJ at October 1, 2008 8:21 am :

This is going to be the start of massive traffic jams, more crime, more folks moving to Varina. As much as I dislike driving to Mechanicsville to shop it is still going to be better than fighting all the mes this place is going to bring.
the store selection said it all!

  22. posted by Octavia at October 3, 2008 8:17 pm :

I also agree that the new mall will be good for our area. More job for our teenage kids so they can have some kind of responsibility. Im also exiceted about the restaurant because I have eaten myself to death at Apple Bees. And for those who have a problem with the selected stores. No one said you have to shop there so continue to burn your gas and go else where.

  23. posted by Octavia at October 3, 2008 8:24 pm :

To William, you are really a snob. How about getting your own personal mall built and let you stay out of ours. I bet you stay on the clearance rack and wait until it gets marked down to 70%.

To All.. I am not a native Richmonder, but moved to the Bottoms Bridge area 10yrs ago, after 10 years moving all-around the Richmond area. What a welcome sight to finally have a CHOICE. Thats right William has his choices too, its ok, he cant help the way he is. However, these shops and the community around it, will only survive, if people care enough to take care of it and support it. If you choose to bypass the Shops because of some ill-conceived notions you have about the stores bringing in that “element” you so strongly desire to stay away from, then this project along with the ones (Fairfield) before it will surely fail as well. This project belongs/deserves in the East End, but if the people of this community dont get behind it and support it ( financially and with the same conviction of protecting your own home ) then it is doomed as well. My family will definitely support these shops and the people maintaining it. We all deserve this!

I am excited about the shops at white oak village coming to the east end. I believe it is past due and that it is a welcome sight to race fans and others that often visit the Richmond area. I just hope that it does not become a hang out place like the Va. Center Commons Mall on the weekends, but things are definately headed in the right direction.

I have lived in Varina for almost 40 years! It’s going to be wonderful to save gas and shop in Varina for a change. When I desire to shop at more upscale stores such as Macy’s or Nordstroms, Crate and Barrel, etc. I will go there. But this shopping area provides what most of us need on a daily basis. And, to suddenly have my choice of 7 new restaurants is the greatest thing ever. Mark my words, there will be standing room only most of the time in all of them. Varina has grown and is loaded with people. Don’t underestimate our community! With the recession and gas prices, it will be a savings to hang out close to home. I believe that stealing happens everywhere. Young people hang out in malls and shopping areas everywhere. Our shopping center will be respected and appreciated…I believe that.

Folks like William and Ebony are so narrow minded it pathetic. First off it “The Shops at White Oak Village” NOT “The Mall at White Oak Village”. If you all are so concerned about crime and safety then stay your behinds home or shop else where as you have been doing. Why is that eveytime we see a DTLR, DOTS or SHOE CITY the place has to be labeled as the ghetto. That is such a negative way to think. These businesses signed leases to open their business in this mall. That is out of our hands. William and Ebony if you all live on this side of the shops and you have these deep concerns then consider relocating to Stony Point or closer to Short Pump then you won’t have to be concerned with what stores are open at White Oak. Short Pump has a Target, Sam’s, Lowes and a DOTS so what are either of you talking about. Laburnum will be no more crowded than Midlothian leading to Stony Point or Broad Street leading to Short Pump. So Ebony and William put a sock in it and stop spending money you don’t have. Stop trying to keep up with the Jones’ and live within your means.

I am very pleased that the new mall is here with so many needed shops. I would really like to see a Movie complex set up on our side of Henrico, showing all the up to date Movies, so our children don’t have to go across town.
    Thought for the New Mall!

To all of you who are so concerned about our (bad) new shopping center STAY HOME!!! We don’t need you. I think that those who Claim to have Soooo much and are not happy probably can’t really afford to shop at those other stores and are trying to be something they are not. I CAN afford to shop there but I don’t most of the time because I don’t need that to be important in others eyes. I wish you all a BLESSED day.

I look forward to the convenience of driving the very short distance from Church Hill to White Oak for my groceries, hardware, a pair of shoes and maybe some lunch, then stopping by the “Pumpkin Patch” on the way home for my Halloween pumpkins and mums! Everybody wins!

Welcome White Oak. It is a much needed asset to the East End/Varina area. We do not need it to be another West End. The West End is way too crowded and such a HECTIC nightmare! Who needs it? I would much rather have the CHOICE to be close to home and have access. I am just hoping the community gets behind this venture. CRIME is EVERYWHERE! No matter where you live. It all boils down to CHOICES in life. Where you CHOOSE to spend your money and WHOM or WHERE you choose. I am a EASTENDER and I am soooooooo excited about this area. I LOVE the UKROPS, SAMS and LOWES they are my top stores! The rest is just all icing on the cake. MORE TO COME for sure Red Lobster, Longhorn’s Steak and Bath and Body Works in 2009! I appreciate everything there is to offer. SOME PEOPLE are never satisfied with what they have….. You definitely cannot please EVERYONE. Again, Thank you to all of the people that worked so hard to bring us this shopping experience. I am so thankful. A Barnes and Noble and a MOVIE theater would be AWESOME!!!! Like I said, MORE TO COME……..

So far there hasn’t been any problems. I guess all of you that thought it would be a disaster were wrong. I’m happy to have a Target, Sam’s, PetSmart, Qdoba, and Lowe’s so close by. I can do without the other stores, but you can’t be happy with everything. The West End has more crime, more home invasions than Varina. And I don’t make less money than the people who live in the West End, so I don’t know what all you pessimists are talking about. It sure beats the craziness in Short Pump. I liked Short Pump much better when there was less buildings and more grass! I can live without everything else that’s in Short Pump except Trader Joe’s, but I hope we’ll get that one day.
