Prepare to dig much deeper in those pockets…

Natural Gas is going up in the City of Richmond again!

“Rising energy costs soon will hit natural-gas bills from the city of Richmond.

A typical customer can expect to pay about $19 more per month — from $114 to $133 — under the first of what could be two rate increases planned through the end of next winter, Christopher L. Beschler, Richmond’s director of public utilities, told the City Council last night.” - RTD

bird spectacle

Purple Martins in Shockoe Bottom

I’m a bona fide bird geek but you don’t have to be like me to enjoy the thrilling spectacle of swirls and swaths of Purple Martin tornadoes swooping into the city to roost. Take a moment out of your evening to head down to the 17th Street Farmer’s Market just before sunset and take it in. At 17th and Franklin you’ll probably notice a skygazing crowd and you’ll know you are in the right place. Prepare to be regaled and while you might be astounded by the lovely visage, do try and keep your mouth closed. Next month the Purple Martins are migrating to South America so don’t delay.

Parker Street Movie Review: The Dark Knight

One would have to be a complete recluse, not to have been exposed to the recent Bat-Hype. The Dark Knight directed by Christopher Nolan, the latest in a Batman movie ‘reboot’ has already set box office records.

Much of the movie buzz has to do with the late actor Heath Ledger, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs back in January. Ledger plays The Joker in The Dark Knight; Ledgers Joker is unpredictable, gritty and disturbing. Knowing that this is the young actors final on screen role is somehow unsettling; he clearly threw himself into the role. The nightmarish image of the demented, scarred clown Ledger portrays will stay with you even after you leave the theater.

The film is about Batman, played Christian Bales, I suppose, but there are so many other colorful characters like The Joker, that the ‘Dark Knight’ is almost boring. It plays out more like a crime drama where the villains are much more interesting than the cops chasing them.

Let it be known that out of all the comic-movies within the last few years this is a standout. Director Christopher Nolan seeks to bend the concept of heroes and villains. Batman, whose only real answer to Gotham’s corruption is violence, asks himself, ‘Am I doing more harm than good?’ Violence begets more violence.

The film does a lot two and a half hours. Almost too much. They could have saved the last 45 minutes for the beginning of the inevitable 3rd installment. The overload will make you want to talk about the movie afterwards. Certain scenes and plot twists and turns stick with you like post traumatic stress.

Did I mention it was dark? The PG-13 rating is well earned; the graphic violence peaks, as the Joker carves smiles in more than one person just off screen.

Rating: See it

Justice for Donald J. Harris-Murdered!

My family member Donald Harris was brutally mudered when he left his home on the night of December 11, 2000 to go get a pack of cigarettes.  He was found 20 minutes later in the back seat of his car in Gillies Creek, shot in the head.  He was not into drugs and he would have given the shirt off of his back to anyone. Instead someone decided to shoot him for no reason. Some heartless coward is walking the street while we had to lay a 34 year old to rest two weeks before Christmas. I hope that the person or persons that murdered him suffer the same, if not worse fate that they brought to him. If anyone knows of these cowards, it would be a relief for our family to have some peace knowing that this scum is off of the street and not harming anyone else.  I don’t usually wish harm to anyone, but for someone to take an innocent life of a man for no reason deserves the worst fate that could possibly be brought to them.  We are looking for answers, as we have been for almost 8 years now.  There is not a day that goes by that we don’t grieve for him.  I know someone out there knows something or maybe who did this to him and if you have a heart in your chest you will contact the Richmond Police Dept. with any information. Detective Fultz is handling the case.  Please, give our family some peace and put this person or persons where they belong.

Would anyone be interested in starting a Neighborhood Association for the Fulton Hill Area?

I would like to get some feedback on starting a Neighborhood Association for Fulton Hill. Now I know what comes to mind when you think of a Neighborhood Association - You can only paint your house a certain color, you have to have your trashcans hidden by a wooden structure or you can’t put lawn ornaments in your yard. Yes, those are rules but rules people in other Neighborhood Associations have put into place. With a Neighborhood Association you as residents are the ones that create the rules and guidelines but they are much more then that.
