Neighborhood Resource Center provides opportunity for Richmond children
The Neighborhood Resource Center located near Darbytown and Williamsburg Roads opened its doors several years ago to the residents of Fulton Hill. What used to be a place where letters and packages were sent and delivered has been transformed into a place that holds a mission, a mission of providing hope for the children of greater Fulton Hill.
The NRC comes complete with a full day Montessori program. While the Montessori school has a reputation of being a pricey education, it has been made more affordable to residents of the community.
Ashley Metz, a teacher at the Montessori school, said, “Because of the sliding scale of tuition and the scholarships given by the Neighborhood Resource Center, this is available to a lot of children who might not otherwise be able to afford this kind of program.”
The NRC also focuses attention on public school students as well. After school is done, the older children have the option to ride the bus to the center for after school activities. Computers along with Internet access, someone to help with homework and a healthy environment equal a positive experience. “They play together, joke together, its kind of a club for them you know, it’s kind of like a clubhouse,” said Penny Ferris, a social worker and leader of the after school program.
Thanks to generous donations of money, supplies and time, the NRC is made possible. The mission as one contributor puts it: To leave the world a little better than she found it.

Great article! Thank you Deb and VCU!
Anyone interested in doing a full-length article on the Montessori program? :)
FYI, the audio cuts out during the teacher interview about 30 seconds into the piece. Thanks for highlighting such a special part of our community.
