Old House Authority offers restoration information
The RTD’s New venture can help with restoration profiles the Old House Authority, a new venture of Jennie Dotts, Walter Dotts, and Dixon Kerr that offers services and information on restoration experts and old-house renovation, and “sells products such as invisible storm windows that are historically accurate, aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient”. The Old House Authority also offers assistance to artisans and craftsmen.

CARE Program Helps Small Business Owners
The Commercial Area Revitalization Effort (CARE) Program is designed to return viability to older neighborhood commercial districts. The program operates through a partnership between local neighborhood merchants, residents and the City of Richmond. The program offers rebates and other incentives to help small business owners rehabilitate commercial exteriors and interiors, security improvements and more. It also offers a loan program for building rehabilitation and renovation of commercial space. Learn more »

Music from Mali at the NRC!

2008 Grammy nominee Cheick Hamala Diabate, the guitarist and ngoni player from Mali in West Africa, will perform Saturday, Feb 16th @ 8pm at Fulton Hill’s Neighborhood Resource Center, 1519 Williamsburg Rd. Big Mama’s cart serves up home-cooked soul food
Next time you’re craving a delicious home-cooked meal, head down to Williamsburg Road and treat yourself to the soul food delights of Big Mama’s vending cart. CEO and head chef Earline Fenner has been running her own food business for more than thirty years. The cart is just one of the places she drops off her made-fresh-daily food. At about $4 a plate, it’s a bargain, too. Fenner says, “I fix it daily, when you fix it fresh, people enjoy it better.” Big Mama’s cart is open from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

Joyce’s Beauty Lounge is one of the most cherished venues in Fulton Hill, nestled at the first four-way stop at 1626 Williamsburg Road. Residents of the urban, working-class neighborhood gather at the salon to watch the afternoon football games and catch up on current happenings in the town. Joyce Monroe, 61, opened her beauty shop in 1991 and has since served a steady flow of customers in need of a new hair-do.
