As temperatures rise, heat-related deaths among the elderly skyrocket
Maybe have heard, but global warming is causing an increase in temperatures worldwide. You have heard about it on the news and wondered, how does this effect me? Well, there are many effects of global warming, but the main concern here in Richmond is the increase in high-heat days as temperatures continue to rise. This effects those of us in the city in a variety of ways. Sure it makes us uncomfortable, having your bum stick to your vinyl car seat is no one’s idea of a good time, but there is a far more serious implication of this increase in high heatwaves. In fact, it is deadly serious.
The increase in heatwaves has caused an increase in deaths among the elderly. Elderly persons are more likely to live alone. As we humans get older, it happens to all of us I promise, we lose the ability to regulate our body heat. This means that the elderly often can’t sweat to cool themselves down. This makes it very important for older folks to cool down other ways like wearing light, loose clothing, drinking plenty of liquids (water and juice), staying in air conditioned areas, and taking cool baths and showers.
If you know someone who is older and lives alone, it is important to check on the during times of extreme heat (temperatures of 90-100+ degrees). Make sure that they are cool and comfprtable. Who knows, by dropping in on a neighbor, you might be saving a life.
Tips for Staying Safe in the Heat
- stay inside and out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (noon-5 p.m.)
- keep air conditioning on and fans on high
- if you don’t have air conditioning, go to the library, community center or mall
- drink water or juice (avoid caffeine and sugary drinks)
- invite friends over to play games that keep your minds off of the heat
