Fulton Citizen Journalist
In the computer room at the Powhatan Center everyday people in the Fulton community with the help of some professors from Virginia Commonwealth University became journalist.
There was much excitement during the first brainstroming seesion. Everyone had ideas on what kind of articles could be featured on the community website.
Armchair Life would review movies, tv shows, and current events . It is the brain-child of Mrs. Karen. Mrs. Karen, whoes house on Parker street is currently being remodeled, says she will begin the on-going feature “once my bathroom[renovation] is under control.”
Brandon hopes to highlight some of Richmonds historic sites in and around the neighborhood. “I went to the Capitol Building for the first time this weekend. I’ve been in Richmond for seven years and never visited!” Brandon promises to see more sites and post the pictures online. “Everyone should see these places,” he says.

Recreation Sports Assist in the Childhood Obesity Epidemic
While the term epidemic has been used to label everything from the gay pride epidemic, to the fashion epidemic of the 1980s, the word regains its meaning when in reference to childhood obesity. The prevalence of overweight among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years, going from 7% in 1980 to 18.8% in 2004 and an estimated 61% of overweight young people have at least one additional risk factor for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As temperatures rise, heat-related deaths among the elderly skyrocket
Maybe have heard, but global warming is causing an increase in temperatures worldwide. You have heard about it on the news and wondered, how does this effect me? Well, there are many effects of global warming, but the main concern here in Richmond is the increase in high-heat days as temperatures continue to rise. This effects those of us in the city in a variety of ways. Sure it makes us uncomfortable, having your bum stick to your vinyl car seat is no one’s idea of a good time, but there is a far more serious implication of this increase in high heatwaves. In fact, it is deadly serious.

There will be a meeting concerning zoning in the East End tomorrow (Thursday) at 6PM at EDI on 25th Street. Given the brouhahas over the difficulties that businesses trying to open in the area experience, this should be a good one.

7th District Mayor’s Roundtable meeting

The October meeting of the Mayor’s Roundtable for the 7th District met tonight at EDI on 25th Street. Not counting the folks directly involved in running the meeting or presenting, there was an audience of 5. It was a small but feisty gathering, with a presentation on the City of Richmond 2008-2013 Consolidated Plan and Central Montessori School on the agenda.

Worn Again Fashion Show to benefit NRC
Check out the 3rd Worn Again Fashion Show this Saturday, a fun event in which “designers” are given random fabric and clothing from which to create an outfit. The show benefits the Neighborhood Resource Center and the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. The 3rd Worn Again Fashion Show is this Saturday, October 27th at Relish (S. 15th St between Cary and Dock Sts), doors open @8PM, tickets are 15 dollars.

BUILD SCHOOLS NOW campaign kicks off
Richmond City Council of PTAs outlined the BUILD SCHOOLS NOW initiative prior to the most recent School Board meeting. The initiative includes among its first requests a new Fulton Elementary School.
